A Rare Disease Action Plan launched by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is a regional economic forum composed of 21 members and established to leverage the growing interdependence of the Asia-Pacific. From 15 to 17 November 2018 took place the APEC CEO Summit 2018, during which the APEC LSIF Rare Disease Network launched a Rare Disease Action Plan to provide APEC’s member economies with a framework for policy action to tackle the challenges of rare diseases. The Action Plan outlines 10 key areas for action including: raising public awareness of rare diseases; promotion of rare disease research and development; and healthcare system design to ensure that patients are diagnosed and cared for in a timely manner. The importance to tackle the challenges of rare diseases was already highlighted in the Health Asia Pacific statement 2020 and the Action Plan sets the target that the stated objectives will be fulfilled by 2025. The 58-page document, a result of a 21-country cooperation, outlines clear objectives, indicators and actions corresponding to each recommendation.
