Paediatric telegenetics services: Geneticists, pediatricians and genetic counselors team up
A study published in Genetics in Medicine aims to provide an access to genetic services to an underserved region by creating a telegenetics service giving viable solutions offered by the collaboration of a paediatrician, medical geneticist, and genetics counsellor (GC). The study results concluded that patients’ satisfaction towards this new service is high and comparable to in-person visits, and the system presents fewer difficulties due to avoiding travel to metropolitan centres, thus engendering no cost or time lost for the patient. The telegenetics service provides an easy access to paediatricians and genetic counsellors, thus allowing previously isolated patients competent, satisfactory and convenient access to a genetics specialists. The telegenetics clinic can allow more medically complex cases to be seen sooner by the geneticist and to evaluate common genetic conditions timely.
