NBIA Disorders Association Announces Research Grants for Neurodegeneration with Brain Iron Accumulation (NBIA)
The NBIA Disorders Association is currently accepting applications for one-year grants for clinical and translational research studies related to the early detection, diagnosis, or treatment of patients with two forms of NBIA: Beta-propeller Protein-Associated Neurodegeneration (BPAN), caused by mutations in the gene WDR45, located on the X chromosome; and Fatty Acid Hydroxylase-associated Neurodegeneration (FAHN), caused by a mutation in the FA2H gene.
A grant not to exceed $45,000 for one year will be awarded by the NBIA Disorders Association for each disorder. Research resources, including model organisms developed under this funding initiative must be shared per National Institutes of Health guidelines. These guidelines can be found at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/policy/model_organism. In addition, investigators are encouraged to share novel cell and animal models or technologies that are not yet defined in the NIH guidelines.

The Ataxia of Charlevoix Saguenay Foundation offers annual research fellowships that will lead to a treatment for autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix Saguenay (ARSACS). A maximum of $100,000 could be awarded for a period of one year and could be renewed for a second year by way of a new application. Also, for this year, a funding application for a specific project could include several labs in Canada or elsewhere. In such a case, the $100,000 limit would not apply. Call for Research Proposals from DEBRA International - NOW OPEN
DEBRA International just launched a call for research proposals: the 'All-Priorities' Research Call.
Current research priorities:
- Improve our understanding of the biology and genetics of all forms of EB, as better understanding can lead to new approaches to diagnose and treat EB
- Work towards the development of therapies (including possible gene-therapies, cell- therapies, drug therapies or protein therapies)
- Understand the nature of wound healing and the development of skin cancer in EB, and seek to develop better treatments and prevention strategies
- Support clinical care research to improve the management of EB through symptom relief

Limb girdle muscle weakness (LGMW) can result from multiple causes. Early and accurate diagnosis is critical to optimal disease management.
