Northern Ireland: Improvements needed to support people living with a rare disease
An article in the Orphanet Rare Diseases Journal (OJRD) highlights a study conducted in 2018-2019, through an online survey and semi-structured interviews, on the available information and educational resources for people living and working with a rare disease (RD) in Northern Ireland. Diverse resources were also consulted such as registries, training and improvement support, or online services. Rare disease collaborative groups (community groups, voluntary and charities) participated in study and gave 31 detailed answers.
It was stated that RD patients and workers are facing difficulties and unmet needs, for example in accessing adequate information and support. The survey findings showed that training for healthcare professionals, excellent communication skills, and adequate support for carers and involvement in research were greatly needed to assure an adequate delivery of care to RD patients and workers.
