Australia's National Disability Insurance Scheme: Strategic priorities for improvement
Rare Voices Australia, their partner organisations, and the Australian National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) have agreed to progress four key priorities within the framework of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). They are:
- Ensuring decisions about applicants and candidates are informed by appropriate expertise.
- Educating NDIA staff on the specific needs of the community.
- Discussing ways to navigate the complex interactions between different social support programmes.
- Improving data collection regarding acceptance and participation of rare disease patients in the NDIS.
These priorities aim to address systemic issues the rare disease community faces when interacting with the NDIS. They were developed following a meeting in early 2023, building on the momentum generated by similar consultations which have been taking place over the past several years. It is hoped that by focusing on the highlighted priority areas, broad-scale changes can be made to the NDIS which will provide a foundation for other necessary improvements.
