RDI publishes Framework for Improving Quality of Life in Rare Diseases

On 10 October, in honour of World Mental Health Day, Rare Diseases International (RDI) published the Framework for Improving Quality of Life for Persons Living with a Rare Disease. This document aims to understand the needs and priorities of people living with a rare disease (PLWRD) and their families, in order to inform initiatives seeking to improve their quality of life (QoL).
The framework was developed in the context of the adoption of the WHA Resolution on rare diseases in May of this year, which engages Member States to develop and strengthen rare disease policy at the national and international levels. Responding to the current lack of guiding documents focusing on improving QoL for PLWRD, the framework serves as a resource for policy makers and stakeholders. It seeks to ensure that initiatives such as the forthcoming Global Action Plan for Rare Diseases take a holistic approach to rare disease care, ensuring that no one is left being in accessing essential healthcare services.
In the framework, RDI explores the three interconnected pillars which support QoL for the rare disease community: physical well-being, mental well-being, and being an active member of society. It further identifies 36 specific factors which impact QoL for PLWRD, organised into 6 thematic areas.

Together, these factors are intended to reflect a flexible, adaptable framework that accommodates various aspects of life and reflects a person’s journey with a rare disease. Moving forward, RDI intends to enrich the framework with practical guidance based on archetype context and scenarios. The hope is that by defining and explaining the various aspects which impact QoL for PLWRD, the framework will help shape effective policies, address gaps in care, and drive meaningful change for the rare disease community worldwide.
