A recent article published in the journal Rare analyses the financial impact experienced by caregivers of children living with a rare disease. Researchers conducted a series of semi-structured interviews with rare disease organisations in Europe and the United States in order to better understand the out-of-pocket costs associated with caregiving, and the resulting impact on caregivers’ lives.

Of the organisations included in the study, 82% reported chronic caregiver financial distress. The average household income loss was reported as €500-€2000 (588-2355 USD) per month, primarily due to out-of-pocket costs for therapies, assistive devices, home adaptations, and travel. These expenses were found to be compounded by structural barriers such as restrictive eligibility, administrative complexity, and geographic inequities. Furthermore, this financial burden has a gendered impact: approximately 80% of caregivers were found to be women, leading to disproportionate rates of employment disruption and emotional strain. Secondary impacts identified included debt, housing instability, marital breakdown, and reduced educational participation for affected children.

This study highlights the significant financial burden faced by families and caregivers affected by rare diseases, and the urgent need for policy to address structural drivers of caregiver financial hardship. Some of the priority actions reported by advocacy organisations included caregiver recognition and compensation, streamlined benefit processes, expanded coverage for non-clinical costs, and harmonised cross-regional standards.

A new article has been published in European Journal of Human Genetics assessing the creation and current status of the role of Genomic Pathway Manager (GPM) in the French health system.

The French Ministry of Health created the GPM as a novel type of health professional under the 2025 French Genomic Medicine Initiative (PFMG2025), a programme which sought to make clinical genome sequencing widely accessible throughout the country through the deployment of dedicated care pathways. This framework includes a number of defined priority pre-indications for genome sequencing, and new digital tools for e-prescription of analyses.

Within the PFMG2025, GPMs act at the intersection between clinical practice, operational organisation of care pathways, and interdisciplinary coordination. They assist with prescription, coordinating sampling processes, and managing multidisciplinary meetings in order to ensure cohesion between a large number of medical professionals from different specialties.

Based on a survey conducted in May 2023 among all recruited GPMs, their principal roles were data entry in prescription systems, participation in multidisciplinary meetings, and training clinicians. Those with training as a genetic counsellor also reported significant involvement in patient information sessions. Overall, GPMs expressed a high level of job satisfaction, despite persisting challenges such as geographical disparities and the need for continuous training.

Under the PFMG2025, the establishment of GPMs within the French health system has helped streamline genomic medicine pathways. The initiative’s success may be of inspiration to other countries seeking to similarly expand access to genome sequencing.

A new article has been published in Frontiers in Public Health, discussing the different possible applications of knowledge graphs to rare disease research. The authors explore a range of uses, such as the discovery of pathogenic mechanisms; enhancing clinical diagnosis; and optimising drug repurposing. In particular, the article highlights the growing integration of knowledge graphs with large language models to improve interpretability and precision in medical decision-making.
